On 16 October, 2021, the 15th Anniversary of Pui Kiu College and the Opening Ceremony of Tsang Lau Kwok Lai Sports Centre was celebrated in the school. We were honored to have Mr Caspar Tsui, Secretary for Home Affairs, Home Affairs Bureau and Mr. Daniel Chan, Hong Kong Paralympian, Bronze medalist in the men’s WH2 wheelchair badminton event, Tokyo Paralympics 2020 as our guests of honour. Daniel also shared his life experience with students and teachers and engaged in a friendly match with our students on his specialized wheelchair.

The attitude determines the altitude

In the ceremony, Daniel shared his life experience with students and teachers of Pui Kiu College. Daniel recalled how he was born able-bodied. In 2008, his life reached a critical turning point. At 22 years old, he was in a car accident and required amputation of his left leg due to the critical condition. He hit rock bottom because of this incident but fortunately, he was able to walk out of the unlucky shadow.

As Daniel summarized, the three keys to his success of walking from trough to peak are – ‘attitude, conviction and commitment’. He stressed ‘The attitude determines the altitude. Whether we can succeed or not depends on how convicted and committed we are. The accident, 13 years ago, took my left leg but not my life away. I sincerely wish that students can foster a proper attitude and be a person who commits.’ Afterwards, Daniel changed to his sportswear and sat on his specialized wheelchair. He then engaged in a friendly match with students from the Pui Kiu College Badminton Team in the Sports Centre.
