2016-2017 Sports Day

As the sports ground boomed with the valiant notes of our national anthem, the red and gold national flag rose above all. It radiated crimson red in the azure sky as though it was alight; marking the start of the sports day and meeting the cheers of the crowds.

The first event of the sports day was the hundred meter sprint heats. As one of the sports day's most prominent events, the event well and truly drew the curtains on the sports day. At the blink of an eye, the atmosphere jumped up a notch and the numerous chants and cheers from the students echoed through the grounds, magnified manifold by the pure enthusiasm of the students.

Our attention once again focused on the starting line, as the athletes readied themselves. At the referee's order, a deafening ban reverberated through the stands and the athletes shot of quick off the mark. It took only seconds for the reigning champion, Ruby Lee to establish a clear lead, as the crowds gazed upon her nimble and quick steps as she surged towards the finish line at electrifying pace. The race drew near its end with the crowd mesmerized at the athletes' technique as Ruby Lee, reigning grand champion crossed the finish line with startling pace with one great leap, leaving her competitors in the dust. The event thus drew to an end shortly after Ruby Lee's finish, yet her remarkable speed and stature was deeply engraved in the minds of the spectators.

When we interviewed Ruby Lee with regards to her spectacular performance, she replied that it was all due to her consistent and demanding training regime and that her well-honed technique was amassed through hard work with her weekly training, her indomitable will for perfection and her steadfast focus towards sports. As the proverb goes, "success comes to those who dare and act." This was realized as she bagged the gold medal for the event near the end of the day, bringing the house down with her consummate performance.

As the sun's magnificent rays dimmed, most of the events had already produced their well-deserved winners and the crowds were thirsting for the final mega event of the day-----the greatly anticipated inter-class 4x100 meters relay race. What sets this event apart from the others was that the athletes in this event not only represented themselves, but also the reputation of their class. With such a heavy burden spurring the athletes on, it is little wonder that the athletes always give it their best shot, despite being drained of all energy and strength in their previous endeavours. In midst of the virtuous competition, the crowd's passion sky rocketed, with their ear-rending shouts shaking the stadium, their excited chants resonating throughout the neighbourhood and their passionate screams violently jarring sleeping spectators awake.

The first day thus drew to an end amidst the sonorous clamors and roars from the students. As we are writing, it seems that unfortunately, the second day will have to be postponed to 2017, to let the disappointed athletes battle it out, being a blot in the joyous end of the first day.
